brain drain

Causes and effects of brain drain

Introduction:

brain drain
Brain drain can be defined as immigration of technically skilled people from their original country to another one. It is remarkable that this phenomenon is one of the most complex problems that menace poor countries. So, what are the causes and the consequences of the phenomenon? And what are the solutions that can be suggested?

Causes of Brain Drain:

Concerning the causes of brain drain, highly skilled people are living in bad circumstances in their own countries and they are not well paid for their work. Besides, their own countries have a few job opportunities and a lot of problems, for example, political conflicts, dictatorship, terrorism, discrimination, diseases, and poverty. In addition to this, some poor countries are overpopulated and the governments can not control all the people and their problems.

The effects of Brain Drain:

As to the effects, brain drain has many effects that can be divided into the negative ones that concern the countries of origin and the positive ones that concern the receiving countries. In the countries of origin, the governments are wasting billions of dollars to offer education to their citizens, but they do not benefit from services of their highly skilled citizens who immigrate towards the rich countries (brain gain). Brain drain really reduces numbers of dynamic and innovative people who are the base of the development of the country.

The measures that should be taken to stop brain drain:

The measures that should be taken to stop brain drain are as follows: firstly, good jobs with higher salaries should be offered to highly skilled people in order to encourage them to stay in their own countries. Secondly, security and stability must be achieved. Thirdly, vital domains like education, health, and economy must be developed.
To sum up, I advise my fellow-country men to stay in their countries and not to leave them because the development of the countries is not only the responsibility of the state, but all the citizens, especially, highly skilled ones are also responsible for that.
